Exercises
Proliferation Security Initiative participating countries take part in regular desktop and 'live' exercises designed to test the adequacy of our domestic legislation and export controls, and responses to the suspected transport of weapons of mass destruction and related materials.
NZ Customs patrol vessel Hawk IV.
Participating countries get the chance to test their responses to scenarios involving the trafficking of weapons of mass destruction or related items, and ensure their responses comply with domestic and international law.
Engaging in these exercises also strengthens the bonds of cooperation between Proliferation Security Initiative participating countries. Countries share information, not only between governments, but also between governments and the private sector - eg the shipping industry.
Exercise Maru was the last Proliferation Security Initiative exercise and was held in Auckland between 15-19 September 2008.
